Dalam kajian wacana (discourse analysis) kita kenal istilah functional grammar. Functional grammar adalah susunan kata bahasa (wording of language) yang mencakup 3 aspek utama yaitu participant, process, dan circumstances. Functional grammar dapat digunakan untuk mengetahui clausa dengan cara melihat grammar sebuah kalimat. Ada beberpa istilah yang ada dalam Functional Grammar yaitu
1. Field
Field adalah ideational meaning/ what is the topic of text.
2. Tenor
Tenor adalah interpersonal meaning – hal ini berbeda arti pada setiap speaker – who/ what kind of person produce this text? for whom.
3. Mode
Mode adalah how language being use.
4. Mood
Mood adalah subjek rasa (feeling finite). Merupakan bagian dari clause (subject + finite)
Example: Panda eat bamboo
5. Goal
Goal adalah stand alone
Example: Book
6. Range
Range: bound with another process.
Example: Playing is a game.
7. Agen
Agent: pelaku
8. Senser
Senser: human being
9. Mental
10. Textual meaning
Clause of representation: semantic category.
11. Circumstances
Answer why, when, how, time place accompany, how many.
12. Process
By verb, gave, donate
Material: material doing (process) an does (participant) BehaviorVerbal, ex: explain, ask, tell.Mental process, ex: like believe

14. Relation process
Example: he was a daughter
